Hope & Miracles

There will always be hope
and there are always miracles,
for every now and then we'll see
all hope and miracles start with me
... and my God.

An ex-gang member embarks on a new life

Ng Ting Wei shares how he renounced his life of crime to start from scratch again

By the age of 22, Mr Ng Ting Wei had already spent over five years of his life in prison.

His first brush with the law was when he was caught selling illegal VCDs at the age of 16. Later that year, he was arrested while unpacking contraband cigarettes in a warehouse.

Mr Ng, now 25, was then sentenced to two years of probation, where he had to stay in a hostel. But he often ran away to meet up with fellow gang members.

His parents were struggling with a failing family business so he was left on his own most of the time.

"I was bored and wanted more friends," he said of his younger self. "The gang members gave me that sense of acceptance."

Mr Ng catching up with prison chief warder Ramesh V. Packrisamy, 46, a reintegration officer, and Mr Koh Shukai, 31, assistant director at the Care Network office. Both men played a big role in helping Mr Ng turn his life around. Mr Ng stays in contact with Mr Koh, and both of them are more like friends now.

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF

Ultimately, the change has to come from oneself. I was tired of going in and out of jail. MR NG TING WEI, on how he made the decision to turn his life around.

During a urine test, he was found to have consumed drugs. He was sent to the Reformative Training Centre (RTC) and spent most of the next five years in and out of prison.

"I knew my actions were wrong, but at that time I didn't realise the full extent of the consequences," he said.

While in prison, Mr Ng picked up reading, out of boredom.

"I started reading novels and when I ran out of books to read, I would read the dictionary," he said.

His family, who visited him regularly, supplied him with the religious books that he asked for.

Reading was his main pastime, but soon Mr Ng found himself yearning for a more meaningful life.

His lowest point in prison was on his 21st birthday.

"I should have been out celebrating with friends," he recalls sadly.

It was also on this day that he chanced upon the book, My Daily Bread, a compilation of spiritual and reflective readings, and started reading it.

That was Mr Ng's first introduction to Roman Catholicism, which now plays a huge part in his life.

In 2012, Mr Ng made one of the biggest decisions in his life - to sever his ties with the gang.

That was his first step to turning his life around. "Ultimately, the change has to come from oneself," he said. "I was tired of going in and out of jail."

In October 2012, at the age of 22, Mr Ng was finally released and placed on supervision.

With the help of the Yellow Ribbon Project, he enrolled in a diploma in construction and engineering course, which he recently graduated from.

The Yellow Ribbon Project also funded his studies and provided a monthly allowance for Mr Ng.

In his spare time, Mr Ng works out at Gold's Gym in Changi where he is a part-time personal trainer. He is at the gym up to five times a week and meets his clients after work. He enjoys exercising, which is why he decided to become a trainer.

His biggest challenge, when trying to assimilate back into society, was building up a sense of confidence again.

"My first group of new friends was from church. I didn't know how to interact with them initially so I observed what they did and listened to how they spoke," he said.

These days, Mr Ng packs his schedule with work and church activities.

He found himself a full-time job as a quantity surveyor and is a certified personal trainer at Gold's Gym, where he trains clients and works out up to five times a week.

He has also applied for a degree course in construction management and, if accepted, he will start school in January next year.

Mr Ng now believes in working hard and praying hard. He is seen here with fellow church members singing hymns at a church retreat. ST PHOTO: CAROLINE CHIA

"The world is a big place and there is so much more I can strive to do," he says confidently.

Prayer for the Elderly
(Protect Us From Falling)

Our FATHER in heaven. Protect all of us from falling, especially the elderly. Help us walk carefully as we go about with the work YOU have planned for us. Keep us healthy in mind, body & spirit. And when it's time for us to be with YOU... we pray that our journey there, will be just like a dream... falling asleep and waking up to the sound of YOUR voice. Amen.

Driving Prayer (for ALL Motorcyclists & Other Road Users)

===.
.
.
Driving Prayer (for ALL Motorcyclists & Other Road Users)... Dear heavenly Father... We pray for all motorcyclists as they are the most vulnerable on the road with nothing to protect them accept for their mandatory helmets (we thank God for it's invention and for making it mandatory in our country). We pray for the parents of these motorcyclists that they would put their worries to good use by praying for the safety of their child as well as for the safety of other children. Besides those riding, we also pray for all other road users... those driving... and even the pedestrians... that we exercise care and diligence... and think of the safety for ourselves as well as for others on the roads. Keep us alert at all times so we may not pose a danger to ourselves or others. Calm our nerves and grant us patience so as to avoid any forms of confrontations with others on the roads... and bring us all home safely to our loved ones. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ and his loving mother. Amen.

The Miracle Prayer

Someone just gave me this prayer card.

Her favourite line is.
"Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul, and spirit."

===.===.===.===.===.===.===.===.===.===.
The Miracle Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come before Thee, just as I am, I am sorry for my sins, I repent of my sins, please forgive me. In Thy Name, I forgive all others for what they have done against me. I renounce Satan, the evil spirits and all their works. I give Thee my entire self, Lord Jesus, I accept Thee as my Lord God and Savior. Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul, and spirit.

Come Lord Jesus, cover me with Thy Precious Blood, and fill me with Thy Holy Spirit, I love Thee Lord Jesus, I praise Thee Lord Jesus, I thank Thee Jesus, I shall follow Thee every day of my life. Amen.

Mary, My Mother, Queen of Peace, all the Angels and Saints, please help me. Amen.

===.
Say this prayer faithfully, no matter how you feel. When you come to the point where you sincerely mean each word with all your heart, Jesus will change your whole life in a very special way. You will see.

The Importance of Prayer

Hi all,

I did this for myself... so I thought I'd share it as well.

PGA

.....
The Importance of Praying For Each Other, The Importance of Prayer
~ by PGA, inspired from a Homily by Fr. Greg Kimm, Pastor

I like this priest's (Father Greg Kimm) homilies. Has a nice flow and it's short, sweet and to the point. I've provided links below if you want to read archives of his other homilies.

Here below, is a sample about 'Praying For Each Other'... this is one of my favorite topics... and... one that I need constant reminder of... because... every now and then... I will forget and question, once again, the usefulness of praying for one another.

I (sort of) get the point now that we should NOT focus on the results but to appreciate it along the lines of us human beings needing company, and especially so when in misery... hence the common saying "misery loves company" (which is actually negative if you try to make others miserable as well... but can be looked on as a natural human need and positive as well). I remember lyrics from a song I heard in an old Talent-Time sung by a Eurasian Girl, Carol Anne Fernandez, dubbed the Singing Nurse (the Eurasians are always singing) that went... "Sweet misery, she loves her company. She's in a crowd when she is all alone." This is only human and it's definitely better than suffering in silence.

Also, whenever there's a game being played, be it football or the likes of it... it makes a lot of difference when there's a home crowd cheering you on... hence the expression "home crowd advantage".

This is (me thinks) what praying for each other basically is. Please remind me when I forget.

Homily by Fr. Greg Kimm, Pastor
Year C
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 21 October 2007

I had a friend in college who absolutely hated it when people told him they were praying for him. He said it made him feel that they thought there was something wrong with him. But with apologies to my old friend, I'd have to say that praying for others--and letting them know that you're praying for them--can be a very good thing.

So often when we pray for others we focus only on the result--on whether our prayers seem to be answered. If the people for whom we're praying don't get well, find a job, stay married, or succeed at some venture, we can come to the conclusion that our prayers are useless. But we often forget that the act of praying for others is in itself an expression of our care and support. It is very much like what Aaron and Hur do for Moses in our first reading, when they provide a place for him to rest his weary body and hold up his tired hands as he attempts to lead the people in battle.

Regardless of how things turn out in the end, just the knowledge that we think enough of them to remember them in our prayers, just that awareness that they are prayerfully surrounded by our love, can strengthen and console those for those for whom we pray. And if this is true, isn't it possible that God is working through us? Isn't it possible that our prayers for others and the positive effect they can have on them are all part of God's efforts to answer their prayers?

see Exodus 17:8-13

First Reading
Exodus 17:8-13

As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight.
A reading from the Book of Exodus

In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel.
Moses, therefore, said to Joshua,
 "Pick out certain men,
and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle.
I will be standing on top of the hill
with the staff of God in my hand."
So Joshua did as Moses told him:
 he engaged Amalek in battle
after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur.
As long as Moses kept his hands raised up,
Israel had the better of the fight,
but when he let his hands rest,
Amalek had the better of the fight.
Moses' hands, however, grew tired;
so they put a rock in place for him to sit on.
Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands,
one on one side and one on the other,
so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people
with the edge of the sword.
The word of the Lord.

Prayer for Baby Jude and Mum Pauline

Dear God, hear our prayer for Baby Jude and his mother, Pauline. Drawing from our own experiences in life with You... we believe that You know what is best for them. We believe that You already have Your plan for them. Nevertheless, we still pray. Give them the best possible outcome for mother and child as they journey in surrender to Your will. We also pray for their loved ones that they find the strength and stamina to persevere in their prayer for Pauline and Jude. We make this same prayer for those of us who are rallying around this mother and child. We pray for the medical servants you've sent to look after them that they would do their job well. We humbly ask all this of you through Your Son and His mother, Mary. Amen.

Use Me Lord ~ Straight from the Heart, Celebrate You

I received these 2 texts from my father-in-law.

===.
01

USE ME LORD

Lord, give me courage to be true
To You in all I say and do
Give me Love to keep me sweet
To everyone I chance to meet
Give me your power to keep me strong
Grant me your presence all day long
Give me the Faith that all may see
How very real you are to me
Give me wisdom to choose the best
Help me perform each task with zest
Give me vision to see your plan
Use me, Lord wherever you can

===.
02

Straight from the Heart

Celebrate you

You are worth celebrating.
You are worth everything.
You are unique.

In the whole world, there is only one you.
There is only one person with your talents,
your experience, your gift.
NO ONE CAN TAKE YOUR PLACE!

God created only one you, precious in His sight.
You have immense potential to love, to care,
to create, to grow, to sacrifice if you believe in yourself.

It doesn't matter your age, or your color,
or whether your parents loved you or not.
(Maybe they wanted to but couldn't.)
Let it go. It belongs to the past.
You belong to the now.

It doesn't matter what you have been,
the things you've done, the mistakes you've made,
the people you've hurt.

You are forgiven. You are accepted. You're OK.
You are loved in spite of everything.
So love yourself, and nourish seeds within you.

Celebrate You.

Begin now. Start anew. Give yourself a new birth. Today.
You are you, and that is all you need to be.

You cannot deserve this new life.
It is given freely, gift.
That is the miracle called God who loves you.
So celebrate the miracle and celebrate you!

Prayer for Jon

===.
Dear heavenly Father... we pray for Jon and those dearest to him, his parents and his younger sister. We're all helpless... but all the more... we need to feel your presence... we need to feel your love for us. You created us... surely you have bigger plans for each and every one of us. Jon now has other complications... please be with his family as they go through the daily tasks of deciding what's best for him. Help them decide what needs to be done. Dear God... help us understand why love has to be so painful. Your own son, our Lord Jesus Christ, bore much pain when he died on the cross for us. Hear our prayer for the Jonathan and his loved ones and if it is your will, may he get better. Amen.

Prayer for this motorcyclist as well as for other road users:

Dear heavenly Father... there was an accident along the CTE {this morning, Tue, 2011 Nov 15} which caused a bit of jam. It involved a motorcyclist. We don't know if the rider was hurt but we pray for him just the same as he is definitely someone else's child. It probably just happened because there were no police or ambulance at the scene and neither was it reported in the news... (continue with Prayer for ALL Motorcyclists & Other Road Users).

Dear Father, we pray for our loved ones who have left this earthly world, that they will find everlasting peace in the heavenly kingdom which You promised. When we falter in our sinful ways... help us return to you in prayer... so that our focus is renewed... and our faith... strengthened. Prayer For Those Who Procrastinate

Dear heavenly Father, we make this prayer for those or us who have difficulty doing the tasks at hand immediately due to a variety of reasons... be it at work or in our studies. Perhaps it is due to distractions that take us away from the tasks we have to do. Help us... by keeping us focused on the things we have to do. Whenever we stray away from the tasks we have in front of us... help us realize quickly... repeat this prayer... and get back on track. Help us also to realize that everything that happens in our lives, happens for reasons best known to you. In realizing our weakness in procrastination, we are humbled... and in our humility... we recognize that we need to prayer to you, our heavenly Father, so that we will be able to see the little miracles that happen everyday whenever you help us. Let us not be discouraged by our falling... but rejoice in our rising... each time we fall... which will can only make us stronger. We make this prayer through Jesus your son... and Mary our mother. Amen.
