When A Poor Lost Soul Is Found ~ by Bosch

.
When A Poor Lost Soul Is Found
(a poem by Bosch)
The great God who made the heavens,
Keeps the stars within their bound,
Still rejoices with His angels
When a poor lost soul is found!

Paraphrased:
Jesus said, "There'll be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people" who never strayed.
~ paraphrased by Fr John Catoir in the Catholic News (Singapore), Sunday 2009 Jun 7, Page 20 (Luke 15:7).

Actual Bible Quote:
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Guitaresque ~ Classical Guitar Quartet (Singapore)

http://guitaresque-singapore.blogspot.com/

Guitaresque is a Singapore-based non-professional classical guitar quartet. All our members are full-time working professionals but have come together because of our shared passion for guitar music.We are alumni members of the NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS), the premier Niibori-styled guitar orchestra in Singapore, founded by Mr Alex Abisheganaden.Guitaresque won the first prize and second prize (ensemble) in the 2004 and 2001 Singapore Guitar Festival Competition respectively.

A word from the quartet:

Four musicians trading ideas while carrying a tune, each providing his own senses and ideas. Together, the quartet paints a beautiful image of the Baroque landscape…
If you think that sounds like a description of a typical string quartet, you are possibly right.

Well… not really.

Not many classical music lovers here in Singapore are familiar with the sight of a classical guitar (CG) quartet — 4 classical guitars playing in an ensemble, ala the string quartet. Guitaresque is such a quartet — and we are 100% made-in-Singapore.

Guitaresque members are Shu Hann, Ivan, Alex and Kevin. We are a group of CG lovers, who have been playing together for the past 8 years though none of us are actually full-time musicians by profession. Instead, we have found time amidst our busy working schedules to meet on a weekly basis, not so much to practice and rehearse a repertoire, but more to be with friends who share a similar passion in guitar music.

Screenwriting & Screenplay

.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenwriting ~ Screenwriting is the art and craft of writing scripts for film, television or video games. Writing for film is potentially one of the most high-profile and best-paying careers available to a writer and, as such, is also perhaps the most sought after. While it is increasingly difficult to make a living as a Hollywood screenwriter, that does not stop tens of thousands of people from trying every year, as the capricious nature of the film industry makes it possible for a complete unknown to launch a career simply by writing a commercially-appealing screenplay and getting it into the hands of the right people.

Coward Of The County ~ Kenny Rogers (Lyrics)

.
Always "w
alk away from trouble if you can". Lyrics from the song 'Coward Of The County' by Kenny Rogers. Lovely melody; meaningful song; rythmic poetry; & a beautiful, short-story.

Ev'ryone considered him the coward of the county.
He'd never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama called him Tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
But something always told me they were reading Tommy wrong.

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I took care of Tommy 'cause he was my brother's son.
I still recall the final words my brother said to Tommy:
"Son, my life is over, but yours has just begun.

Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
Now it don't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you're old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man."

There's someone for ev'ryone and Tommy's love was Becky.
In her arms he didn't have to prove he was a man.
One day while he was workin' the Gatlin boys came callin'.
They took turns at Becky.... n' there were three of them!

Tommy opened up the door and saw his Becky cryin'.
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand.
He reached above the fireplace took down his daddy's picture.
As his tears fell on his daddy's face, I heard these words again:

"Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
Now it don't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you're old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man."

The Gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom.
One of them got up met him halfway 'cross the floor.
Tommy turned around they said, "Hey look! ol' yellow's leavin'."
But you coulda heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked
the door.

Twenty years of crawlin' was bottled up inside him.
He wasn't holdin' nothin' back; he let 'em have it all.
When Tommy left the barroom not a Gatlin boy was standin'.
He said, "This one's for Becky," as he watched the last one fall.
And I heard him say,

"I promised you, Dad, not to do the things you've done.
I've walked away from trouble when I can.
Now please don't think I'm weak, I couldn't turn the other cheek,
Papa, I sure hope you understand:
Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man."

Ev'ryone considered him the coward of the county.

MELBOURNE : A compulsive Australian gambler banned from Sydney's casino blew more than two million dollars (1.5 million US) on the card tables in a neighbouring state in just 43 minutes, a court heard. High-flying property developer Harry Kakavas is suing Melbourne city's Crown Casino in the Supreme Court of Victoria for facilitating his pathological betting, despite knowing he had a problem. Kakavas, 42, was banned by Sydney police from attending the local Star City Casino and he claims the exclusion order should have been enforced Australia-wide, national newswire AAP reported. Instead, his lawyers said rival casino Crown knowingly offered to fly Kakavas to Melbourne on at least 14 occasions and left him gift boxes of 50,000 dollars in "lucky money" on the private jet to help him gamble. During a period of 16 months in 2005 and 2006 Kakavas allegedly turned over 1.5 billion dollars, and was allowed to bet single hands of 300,000 dollars, AAP reported. He lost a total of 30 million dollars, and is suing Crown and its executives for about 20.5 million, AAP said. Crown's lawyer Neil Young said Kakavas was eventually banned from gambling at the casino in August 2006 after losing two million in 43 minutes at the baccarat table. But he rejected claims that Crown had attempted to take advantage of Kakavas. "There was no effort in any sense of the word to lure Mr Kakavas to Crown," Young said. If Crown is found to have breached the Casino Control Act by allowing Kakavas to gamble it could also be liable to pay 700 million dollars in illegally-paid winnings to the Victorian state government. The case continues.

diarrhea, diarrhoia or diarrhoea

.
Is it 'diarrhea', 'diarrhoia' or 'diarrhoea'?

In medicine, diarrhea (from the Greek, "diarrhoia" meaning "a flowing through"), also spelled diarrhoea (see ‘Spelling Differences’ below) is characterized by frequent loose or liquid bowel movements.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spelling Differences
diarrhea (American)
diarrhoea (British)
diarrhoia (Greek)
Simplification of 'ae' (æ) and 'oe' (œ). Many words are written with 'ae'/'æ' or 'oe'/'œ' in British English, but a single 'e' in American English. Examples (with non-American letter in bold): diarrhoea, anaemia, anaesthesia, caesium, gynaecology, haemophilia, leukaemia, oesophagus, oestrogen, orthopaedic, paediatric.
Words where British usage varies include encyclopaedia, foetus (though the British medical community deems this variant unacceptable for the purposes of journal articles and the like, since the Latin spelling is actually fetus), homoeopathy, mediaeval.
In American usage, aesthetics and archaeology prevail over esthetics and archeology, while oenology is a minor variant of enology. The Encyclopædia Britannica retained the traditional spelling even after relocating to the U.S.
Rhinitis (Runny Nose) & Post-Nasal Drip
.
Learn something new as often as you can...
Rhinitis, commonly known as a runny nose, is the medical term describing irritation and inflammation of some internal areas of the nose. The primary symptom of rhinitis is nasal dripping. It is caused by chronic or acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose due to viruses, bacteria or irritants. The inflammation results in the generating of excessive amounts of mucus, commonly producing the aforementioned runny nose, as well as nasal congestion and post-nasal drip (PND) --- {Does 'PND' equal 'Dried Mucus'?} Rhinitis has also been found to adversely affect more than just the nose, throat, and eyes. It has been associated with sleeping problems, ear conditions, and even learning problems. Rhinitis is caused by an increase in histamine. This increase is most often caused by airborne allergens. These allergens may affect an individual's nose, throat, or eyes and cause an increase in fluid production within these areas.
Post-nasal drip (PND) occurs when excessive mucus is produced by the sinuses. The excess mucus accumulates in the throat or back of the nose. {Ok, maybe 'PND' does NOT exactly equal 'Dried Mucus', or does it? Hmm...} It can be caused by rhinitis (allergic or non-allergic), sinusitis (acute or chronic), laryngopharyngeal acid reflux (with or without heartburn), or by a disorder of swallowing (such as an esophageal motility disorder). It is frequently caused by allergies, which may be seasonal or persistent through the year, depending on the allergen(s) involved. Birth control pills or pregnancy can also cause post-nasal drip because of the elevated levels of estrogen hormones.
My Father's Dragon ~ Ruth Stiles Gannett
.
3 Book Triolorgy by Ruth Stiles Gannett.
1 ~ My Father's Dragon
2 ~ Elmer and the Dragon
3 ~ The Dragons of Blueland
.
Ruth Stiles Gannett wrote My Father's Dragon just a few years after her graduation from Vassar College in 1944. It was an immediate success, becoming a Newbery Honor Book, and was soon followed by two sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. All three dragon stories have been continuously in print in the more than 40 years since their publication. The author's other books include Katie and the Sad Noise and The Wonderful House-Boat- Train. She is married to the artist and calligrapher Peter Kahn. They have seven daughters and seven grandchildren.
My Father's Dragon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
.
My Father's Dragon is a children's novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett about a young boy, Elmer Elevator, who runs away to Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon.
.
Both a Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, it is the first book of a trilogy whose other titles are Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. All three were published in a 50-year anniversary edition as Three Tales of My Father's Dragon.
.
.
It was made into an anime film titled, Elmer's Adventures: My Father's Dragon. The illustrations within the book are black and white done with a grease crayon on a grained paper, done by Ruth Chrisman Gannett, who also illustrated other children's books such as My Mother Is the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Paco Goes to the Fair, Hipo the Hippo, and adult books such as Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck and Cream Hill by Lewis Stiles Gannett.
.
Awards and nominations ~ It was cited as a runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1949 and was an ALA Notable Book. It was also nominated for the Ambassador Book Award in 1948.
Film, TV or theatrical adaptations ~ In 1997, the book was made into a Japanese anime film titled, Elmer's Adventures: My Father's Dragon. It starred Yu-ki as Elmer Elevator and Megumi Hayashibara as Boris the dragon.
http://collectingchildrensbooks.blogspot.com/2008/06/fathers-day-brunch.html
.
HER FATHER’S DRAGON ~ What do you do when you have a couple free weeks between jobs? Take a vacation? Hit the beach? Though not even twenty five years old at the time, Ruth Stiles Gannett used her two weeks off to write a children’s classic.
.
Published in 1948 and illustrated by her stepmother, Ruth Chrisman Gannett, MY FATHER’S DRAGON is the whimsical tale of Elmer Elevator, who saves a captive baby dragon by using his wits...as well as some chewing gum, lollipops, and ribbons. Throughout the book, Elmer is referred to as “my father” -- an eccentric choice, but one that gives the book an added dimension and makes it especially appealing for read-alouds. MY FATHER’S DRAGON was named a Newbery Honor Book and continues to be loved by readers today.
.
Two sequels, ELMER AND THE DRAGON (1950) and THE DRAGONS OF BLUELAND (1951) followed.
All The World's A Stage ~ by William Shakespeare
.
Elvis Presley paraphrased the intro of ‘All The World's A Stage ~ by William Shakespeare’ in his song ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’. Here’s more info from Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_world
All the world's a stage is the phrase that begins a famous monologue from William Shakespeare's ‘As You Like It’, spoken by the melancholy Jaques. The speech compares the world to a stage and life to a play, and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life, sometimes referred to as the seven ages of man: infant, school-boy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and second childhood, "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything". It is one of Shakespeare's most frequently-quoted passages.
All The World's A Stage
~ by William Shakespeare
‘As You Like It’, Jaques (Act II, Scene VII, lines 139-166)
(Blog Version ~ Note that everything within these '{parenthesis}' do not belong to the actual phrases by William Shakespeare.)
{00 ~ Intro:}
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
{01 ~ The infant:}
At first the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
{02 ~ The boy:}
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like snail unwillingly to school.
{03 ~ The lover:}
And then the lover, sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress' eyebrow.
{04 ~ The soldier:}
Then a soldier, full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard, jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon's mouth.
{05 ~ The adult (the justice):}
And then the justice, in fair round belly with good capon lin'd, with eyes severe and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part.
{06 ~ The elderly:}
The sixth age shifts into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on side; his youthful hose, well sav'd, a world too wide for his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, turning again toward childish treble, pipes and whistles in his sound.
{07 ~ The 2ND childhood:}
Last scene of all that ends this strange eventful history, is second childishness and mere oblivion; sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything."
Kung Fu (TV Series) ~ David Carradine
.
Relive The Old Days.
Kung Fu (1972-1975) is an American television series which starred David Carradine.
Overall series plot summary
In the late 19th century, Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) is the orphaned son of an American man and a Chinese woman. He has been raised in the Shaolin monastery, and trained by the monks to be a Shaolin master.
In the pilot episode, Caine’s beloved mentor and elder, Master Po, is murdered by the Chinese emperor's nephew, and Caine retaliates by killing the nephew. In order to avoid execution for the nephew's killing, Caine flees from China to western America, where he seeks to find his half-brother, Danny Caine.
Although it is his intention to find Danny while avoiding notice, Caine's training as a priest has instilled in him a sense of social responsibility, forcing him to repeatedly come out into the open to fight for justice. After each such encounter, he is compelled to leave to stay ahead of the emperor's assassins.
The frequent use of flashbacks is used to recall specific lessons during Caine's childhood training in the monastery by his teachers, the blind Master Po (Keye Luke) and Master Kan (Philip Ahn). Part of the appeal of the series was undoubtedly the emphasis laid, via the flashbacks, on the mental and spiritual power that Caine had gained from his rigorous training. In these flashbacks, Master Po calls his young student "Grasshopper" in reference to a scene in the pilot episode:
Master Po: [after easily defeating the boy in combat] Ha, ha, never assume because a man has no eyes he cannot see. Close your eyes. What do you hear?
Young Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Master Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Young Caine: No.
Master Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet?
Young Caine: [looking down and seeing the insect] Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Master Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?
During the concluding four episodes of the third and final season ("Barbary House," "Flight to Orion," "The Brothers Caine," and "Full Circle"), Caine finds his brother Danny, nephew Zeke and two cousins, Joseph and Ezekial.
In Kung Fu:The Movie (1986) Caine (played by Carradine) is forced to fight his hitherto unknown son, Chung Wang (played by Brandon Lee).
Herbie Pilato in The Kung Fu Book of Caine (page 157), also comments that Bruce Lee's son, Brandon Lee, was involved in sequels related to the series:
“The late Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, played Caine's son, Chung Wang. Toward the end of the film, Chung Wang asks Caine if he is his father. The question seems somewhat ironic since — in real life — Brandon's father was the chief contender for the role of Caine in the series. After Bruce Lee lost the part to Carradine, he went back to China, where he made The Big Boss, the film that began his legendary career in martial arts movies.” ~ The Kung Fu Book of Caine (page 157)
Plagiarism Quotes
.
If you steal from one author it's plagiarism; if you steal from many it's research. ~ Wilson Mizner. Quoted in Johnson, A. (1953). The Legendary Mizners. Farrar, Straus & Young, NY, USA
The kernel, the soul – let us go further and say the substance, the bulk, the actual and valuable material of all human utterances – is plagiarism. ~ Mark Twain in his letter to Helen Keller, St. Patrick's Day, 1903 -- through Anne Macy. Reprinted in Anne Sullivan Macy, The Story Behind Helen Keller. 1933, Garden City, NY, USA. This was when Helen Keller herself was accused of plagiarism.
These quotes illustrates the problem faced by many students and authors: distinguishing between mere copying of existing thoughts and genuine creativity. This problem is not new.
A Mother's Love
.
A Mother's Love ~ The story of Susanna Petroysan and her four-year-old daughter.
On December 7, 1988, a massive earthquake hit Soviet Armenia. Apartment buildings collapsed in upon themselves, and people were entombed in all the rubble. Two of those people included Susanna Petroysan and her four-year-old daughter.
They survived the earthquake, but were entombed alive in the rubble of the apartment building. Susanna was pinned flat on her back, but was able to move her arms, and was able to make a little nest out of clothing for her daughter to lay on. The only food that was nearby was one jar of blackberry jam.
Over two days, she fed the contents of the jar to her daughter, eating none herself. After two days, the jar was clean; there was no more food, no water, and, worse, no sign of rescue. Numbed by the cold, weak from lack of food, Susanna began to lose hope. Fading in and out of consciousness, she heard her daughter say, “Mommy, I’m thirsty.”
Susanna struggled to get her senses, and remembered a story about how Arctic explorers had slashed their hands and given their own blood to one of their party who was dying of thirst. Reaching around in the dark, Susanna found a shard of glass, cut her cold-numbed finger, and gave her daughter drops of her very own blood. Again and again, day after agonizing day, she repeatedly gave her own blood to her daughter so that her daughter could live.
Eight days after the earthquake, the mother and daughter were unearthed. The child came out amazingly healthy. The mother, barely alive, survived only because of her love for her child.
What could be more ordinary than the love or a mother and child? What could be more natural than for Susanna to care for her daughter’s needs? To hold her. To give her clothes. To feed her. To song her to sleep. To hold her close. An average mother offering everyday love.
Susanna’s love is lived out in her actions.Just telling her child “I love you.” Would have meant little. So she made her child a warm bed. She fed her blackberry jam. She quenched her daughter’s thirst with her own blood. Her loving actions saved her child’s life. Her passion to act in love had kept her alive as well.
Beautiful portraits. There are sketches too. Here's his profile.
I use to draw since my childhood. Now I am 42.I draw mainly portraits from photos. I think faces hide expressions, beauty, feelings. I used to draw friends and relatives because these faces touch me and celebrities because these faces are familiar with all others.I find in flickr the right place to share my hobby with you.
Fever, Thermometer & Temperature Reading
It all started with SARS and now Swine Flu.
This is the Thermometer I'm using. All information is taken from the website of the Thermometer I'm using.
http://www.geratherm.com/en/
http://www.geratherm.com/en/
Methods:
1 • Oral measurement
2 • Rectal measurement
3 • Axillary measurement
4 • Aural measurement
5 • Forehead measurement
1 • Oral measurement
Measurement location: mouthThe best place to take the patient?s temperature is in the posterior sublingual pouch, i.e. the mouth tissue that is far back under the left or right side of the tongue. In these locations, the temperature corresponds most closely to that achieved by invasive techniques. When using this method, the patient must be able to keep his mouth closed and breathe freely through the nose. He should not have consumed any cold or hot drinks or food within the previous 30 minutes. Normal temperatures are usually between 36.6°C and 36.9°C. This method should only be used in patients over the age of about 4 or 5 years.
2 • Rectal measurement
Measurement location: rectumRectal measurement is an alternative if oral measurement is not suitable for some reason (use of warm or cold treatments around the head or throat, local inflammatory processes, babies and children under the age of 4/5). The rectal temperature is, on average, 0.3°C to 0.4°C higher than the oral temperature.In order to avoid injury or perforation of the rectum, the thermometer should not be inserted further than 2 or 3 cm. For greater ease of insertion, a lubricant should be used. Thermometers with a flexible tip are particularly useful for rectal temperature measurement in restless babies and toddlers.
3 • Axillary measurement
Measurement location: under the armThe under-arm is probably the oldest location for determining body temperature. The first temperature investigations by the German physician Wunderlich a century ago were carried out using exclusively axillary measurement. When his findings were published, which led to the introduction of daily temperature measurement in hospitals all over the world, axillary measurement became standard practice.In babies and young children, the axillary temperature is approximately equal to the rectal temperature. The time required for accurate measurement is around 8 or 9 minutes. Electronic thermometers used for axillary measurement should be operated in monitor mode and not in forecast mode. Axillary measurement is suitable for all age groups.
4 • Aural measurement
Measurement location: at the ear-drum. The ear-drum is an ideal location for temperature measurement. It is supplied with the same blood as the hypothalamus, the temperature regulation centre in the human body. Unlike "external temperature measurement?, such as oral, axillary and rectal measurement, the measurement of temperature at the ear-drum reveals the internal temperature of the body.The accuracy of this type of measurement depends heavily on the correct use of the thermometer and the design of the measuring tip. Since the aural canal is not straight, it takes some practice to precisely determine the infra-red radiation from the ear-drum using the optical measuring system. With children under the age of three years, the design of the probe tip for precise location in the ear is often a problem that leads to measurement inaccuracies. It is also very difficult to obtain accurate measurements in active, somewhat restless toddlers, because it is difficult to position the probe correctly in this age group, too. It is also not always possible to recognise a high temperature in children aged between one month and 10 years.In adults, very good measurement results have been obtained by stretching the auditory canal by pulling gently on the ear, enabling the probe to reach not only the auditory canal but the ear-drum, as the actual measurement location. If only the auditory canal is reached, the temperature measured may be as much as 1°C below the true body temperature.
5 • Forehead measurement
Measurement location: forehead and temple. As already mentioned, external body temperatures can be measured reasonably well close to large blood vessels.It is therefore possible to determine body temperature by means of IR sensors around the forehead and temples. The accuracy of thermometers designed for this type of measurement is, however, a matter of controversy.
