You may have learned the value of driving your car at speeds you can handle but how do you deal with a driver who offensively drives too close behind you? This article will give you some ways to practice simple, safe, and effective measures to get out of a potentially dangerous tailgating situation.

Steps

1 ~ Remain calm! Losing your cool means losing control, and losing control of your vehicle is the last thing you want to do. Deep breaths are a big help. Focus on your situation, and not on the radio or passengers or cell phones, (which you might want to avoid using while driving, especially in a tense situation).

2 ~ Always know your local driving laws. Tailgating is generally against the law, as is causing an accident by driving into someone's back bumper. While you don't want to be in an accident, the aggressive driver behind you will most likely be at fault if he or she drives into you. Chances are they know the outcome if they hit you, and will want to avoid doing so.

3 ~ Pull over and allow the vehicle behind you to pass, if it is safe to do so. This is always the most rapid way of getting rid of a tailgater. If the car behind you is catching up, there's a good chance the driver wants to go faster. If it's safe to do so, let him/her.

On narrower roads, use turnouts to allow others to pass when it is safe to do so. In many places, it is required that slower traffic use turnouts. Elsewhere, it is simply polite.

On a winding road, do not speed up so drastically at passing lanes that others cannot pass. Many drivers go slowly and cautiously around curves and then get on a straightaway and feel that they have the space or visibility to dart ahead. Have the patience to let others past.

4 ~ If at all possible, slow slightly and move away from the center of the road; allowing the tailgater to pass safely. Normally a tailgater just wants to drive faster, so they will pass and leave you alone. If you know people want to pass you, try to stay out of the high speed (passing) lane(s).

5 ~ Maintain a constant speed. This allows the tailgating driver to predict when he can pass you. Avoid speeding up and slowing down to send him a message - this only increases his frustration level.

When in doubt, use your cruise control. This can help ensure that you remain at a constant speed of your choosing, and helps prevent accelerating when an agitating driver is trying to "push" you into speeding up. Plus, you are likely in a tense situation already. Using cruise control means you don't have to concentrate on your speed as much, so you can concentrate more on removing yourself from this situation.

6 ~ Above all else, do not be a source of the problem. If you cannot switch lanes for any reason, various laws of physics are going to prevent the tailgater from driving through you. However, if you're matching speed with a vehicle beside you, perhaps you should consider slowing down and switching lanes. Diffusing the dangerous situation is far more advantageous than bickering over the speed limit.

7 ~ In multi-lane traffic, if you find yourself getting repeatedly tailgated, try driving a safe distance behind a truck. Drivers approaching from behind will see the truck and get into another lane before ever getting close.

8 ~ Communicate. If the driver behind you flashes their high beams on and off, chances are they're just asking you to move rather than being a jerk. Stickers or magnets indicating things like "student driver" or "sorry but i only do the speed limit" are very effective at communicating your driving preference. Turning on your hazard lights (flashers) lets other drivers know that you are experiencing technical difficulties which likely affect your speed, (remember to move out of the way as soon as is safely possible.) Waving offensive hand gestures on the other hand is most likely not going to be helpful, and will only elevate a bad situation. Raising your hands in a "helpless shrug" might seem to indicate that you can't help the situation, but it may also come across as defiant. Plus you're taking your hands off the wheel!

9 ~ If you cannot remove yourself from the situation, prepare for annoying behavior from aggressive drivers. They may turn on their high beams, blow their horn, shout insults and give unfriendly gestures. Flipping your rear view mirror to nighttime position will help if they turn on the high beams, and preparing yourself mentally for the possible onslaught of horns and cursing will help you deal with it.

10 ~ If there are passengers in your car, try not to fluster them. You may ask them to remain quiet while you deal with the offensive driver. They may try to offer advice, but ultimately distractions should be kept to a minimum.

11 ~ Do not view the aggressor as an 'adversary', 'opponent' or 'ignorant driver who needs taught a lesson'. Avoid the urge to be a vigilante. This is not the place to teach lessons, and the tailgater will not learn by having you frustrate them further. Just concentrate on diffusing the situation. Let law enforcement handle the enforcement of laws.

12 ~ Tap your brakes lightly a few times, so that he/she sees your brake lights, but not so hard that you actually slow down. This is another signal for them to back off. (Don't brake hard to 'teach them a lesson' - this will only end up causing an accident, which is worse for everybody.)

Tips

• Practice peace and calm as other drivers actions seek to disturb your driving practices.

• Drive courteously as much as possible: let people pass, let speeders make their own mistakes, make room for people entering the highway, try to follow the zipper pattern when merging, always use signals, etc. The more people do this, the nicer driving will be for everyone.

• Use the simple rule of "slower traffic keep right". (In right-side-of-the-road countries)

• Remember that it is safest to drive in a predictable manner, and even though there is pressure on you, communicate by using your signals.

• Remember that it is safer to "go with the flow" than to be a "rock in the stream". If the average flow of traffic on a road is too fast for you, consider alternate routes.

• Remind yourself that you are entitled to the safest possible experience on the road and must offer this, to inspire others as well.

• When the unsafe driver passes you, take note of their license plate and consider calling a non-emergency law enforcement (such as the highway patrol). If the vehicle has a company identification number and a phone number to call to report unsafe driving, even better. You should never confront another driver, but you can help hold them accountable for poor driving.

• Try not to be a part of the problem. You may not be legally required to switch lanes to get out of their way, but if it is safely possible to get out of the way, you will make things safer and less stressful for everyone on the road.

• Do not slow down "until they back off", this is a false concept. When you slow down, they will obviously slow down to avoid hitting you, but if you continue to slow down, they have no method of "backing off" until you resume speed.

Warnings

• Never attempt to "teach someone a lesson" on the road. All drivers have the same rights on the road and are subject to the same laws. If you are not an on-duty law officer, then you may be breaking the law by imposing your views on driving.

• Don't intentionally do things which aggravate other drivers. At best this is simply obnoxious. At worst, you may find the rare crazy who carries a gun and lacks the self restraint needed to avoid shooting at you. Do not under any circumstances make an already bad situation into a worse one.

• If you carry a cell phone, it is a good idea to keep an emergency number and a non emergency law enforcement number on speed dial. If someone is driving recklessly you should report it to the non emergency law enforcement, (better to have a passenger make the call while you drive!).

Love, not an academic requirement, put Daniel Parmenter in Cole Hall that fateful day.

Parmenter's family recently learned from Northern Illinois University that he was not enrolled in the ocean science class where five students were shot and killed, his stepfather Bob Greer said. Parmenter, a 20-year-old finance major, attended the lecture so he could spend Valentine's Day afternoon with his girlfriend, Lauren Debrauwere, who was a student in the course.

When Steven Kazmierczak began shooting, Parmenter dropped to the ground with his girlfriend and covered her with his 6-foot-5 frame. She survived the attack. He did not.

"We assumed he was enrolled in the class," Greer said. "But he went for Lauren and he saved her life."

CHICAGO (MCT) - Daniel Parmenter and Lauren Debrauwere had been dating for only two months when they sat side-by-side in the front row of an ocean science class at Northern Illinois University on Valentine's Day.

On their first date, he had brought her a rose, and Thursday he was planning to give her a silver necklace. But he never got the chance.

When Steven Kazmierczak entered the hall and began emptying a shotgun and three pistols into the crowd, the couple dropped to the floor, and Dan began praying aloud. Parmenter tried to protect Debrauwere, both families said.

"He covered her up," said Mark Debrauwere, Lauren's father.

"This kid was enormous, he's like 6-foot-5. He was like a refrigerator."

Debrauwere suffered serious injuries but survived the brutal attack. Parmenter did not: He was shot twice in the head, twice in the back and once in the side and was pronounced dead at Kishwaukee Community Hospital later that day, said his stepfather, Bob Greer.

Debrauwere, a 19-year-old sophomore from Hoffman Estates, Ill., suffered gunshot wounds to the hip and abdomen, but she was out of intensive care Tuesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, her father said. One bullet lodged in her upper chest, and it will stay there.

As his daughter struggled with her injuries those first hours after the shooting, her first concern was for her boyfriend. She was unable to talk at first because of a tube in her throat, her family said, but she would write, "Dan?"

The family didn't know how to answer. Mark Debrauwere and his ex-wife, Mary, didn't want to upset their daughter and set back her recovery.

"For a day or so, we told her, 'He's all right,"' her father said.

Finally, after consulting with a hospital social worker, the parents decided it was better to hear it from them than on TV. They broke the terrible news Saturday.

It didn't come as a surprise. "She said she knew he was dead," her father said.

On Monday, Brittany Debrauwere told her sister she was going to a visitation for Parmenter.

"She got very emotional," Brittany said. "She said he was trying to protect her."

Though they lived only about 15 miles apart as high school students - he at York Community High in Elmhurst; she at Barrington High - the two met at the DeKalb school about 60 miles from Chicago. They had known each other for about a year before dating.

Parmenter, 20, was raised in Elmhurst, the son of Gary Parmenter and Linda Greer. He was born with a heart defect and underwent surgery when he was a toddler. The family considered him their miracle baby, friends said.

As a youth, he helped rescue a smaller child from a tree and later stuck up for the boy when he was being bullied, said Diana Smith, his former principal at York, where he was an honors student.

On the football team, Parmenter started at defensive end his junior year, said head coach Bill Lech. He was injured the summer before his senior year, and his doctor didn't clear him to play until the Monday after the first game. By then, someone else had won Parmenter's position, but a spot opened up on offense.

Parmenter offered to switch, telling his coach, "If it's what's best for the team, that's what I'll do," Lech said.

His football career came to an end in his senior year of high school.

"He acquired a fracture somewhere in the back, and the doctor said 'you can no longer play football, otherwise you risk damaging your back permanently,"' said his stepfather.

So Parmenter picked up rugby, a sport he played at NIU. At first, his mother admitted, she didn't know what rugby was.

Greer cleared it up: "'Linda, rugby is football without the padding,"' he told her.

Parmenter was a finance major and a member of the fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha; Lauren Debrauwere, a communications major, was a member of the next-door sorority Sigma Kappa.

But when they met, she was involved with someone else. Then he was.

Only in December did they begin dating each other.

"He was feeling special, excited about the relationship," Mark Debrauwere said. "Lauren was excited, too. She'd liked him for some time."

Parmenter had a way of making the women in his life feel cherished. He called both his mother and his sister on Valentine's Day to tell them he loved him.

Parmenter's funeral Tuesday at Christ Church of Oak Brook was the third of five for students who died from the shooting.

On Wednesday, a memorial service will be held for Gayle Dubowski, a 20-year-old from Carol Stream. Funeral services will be private.

Also Wednesday, services will be held for Julianna Gehant, a 32-year-old from Mendota. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Mendota, with full military honors.

Of the 16 people injured in the shooting, at least four remain hospitalized Tuesday, including Debrauwere. At Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Maria Ruiz Santana, 20, remained in serious condition and Sherman Yau, 20, remained in fair condition. The condition of an unidentified victim at Rockford Memorial Hospital could not be updated. The victim was listed in fair condition on Monday.

Teaching assistant Brian Karpes was discharged from St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford on Tuesday.

At Parmenter's funeral, a cross was draped in Lenten purple and photos of his life showed on a screen. His sister Kristen Parmenter recalled that she and her brother talked for about 10 minutes on Valentine's Day, and he asked about her plans. He told her he had bought a special necklace for his girlfriend.

"I told him I loved him," Kristen Parmenter said Tuesday, choking back tears. "And I said goodbye. I never thought it would be the last time I got to hear his voice. It'll be a long time before I get to see Dan again."

The story of Daniel Parmenter's last minutes inspired those who knew him, Josh Boldt, a fraternity brother, told a congregation of several hundred.

"In his final act, Dan completed what he was ultimately meant to do: save the life of another," Boldt said.

The couple's parents didn't meet until after the tragedy. But when Parmenter's family visited Lauren Debrauwere, "they gave her the Valentine's Day present he had planned to give to her but never got around to wrapping," Mark Debrauwere said. Dan's sister had picked it up at his fraternity house. It was the silver necklace.

My ramblings... please don't ask me... actually this blog post is about how I got to know about this guy, 'John Farnham' and 'Please Don't Ask Me' is the title of the song he was singing. All I know... for now... is that this guy is really very funny, a well rounded entertainer and singer with a voice that has fantastic vocal agility. I'm going to find out more about him. He's a real good Pop-Tenor in my book.

This is really strange... how I sometimes find interesting songs and singers. I was searching for "Why is it difficult to wash oil or grease off plastic?" and I remembered 'Don't Ask Me' a program on TV answering this question and so... I decided to google for it. Burnt Biscuits ~ A Story on Love and the 'Concept of God'

Someone just sent me this via email.

It's a story on love and the 'Concept of God'.

Is your 'Concept of God'... ONLY... to grant your wishes? Or is it more than that?

I like the 'Concept of God' suggested in this story where ~ "[God is] ... the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!"

I know I'll have to get pass the 'Concept of God' because the the 'Concept of God' is only just... MY... 'Theory of Evolution'.

Now... all I need to do is to get pass the "Concept of" and to really get to know "God". Who is HE? What more can I do to know him better? What more must I do that I have not already done? I'm limited. The ball is on HIS side of the court. Maybe it's not my time yet... but till then... I'll just have to be contented with just the 'Concept of God'... and I must say that... the 'Concept of God' does excite me... for now.

I've learnt that...

a concept is only an onset of what I feel to be real, and the

"Concept of God" is the only think that excites me, for now.

I'm looking forward to when it will no longer be... a concept.

I know that this will happen... although I do not know when.

The Burnt Biscuits (Story)

When I was a kid, my mom would prepare special breakfast every now and then. And I remember one night in particular, after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: Honey, I love burned biscuits.

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned.

He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides - a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone! You know, life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like some people do. What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other?s faults - and choosing to celebrate each other?s differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship."

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!

We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket - keep it in your own.

This video has got me thinking... while singing... should we breath through the mouth or nose?

I've heard 3 different answers from a few Vocal Coaches and I'm sure most of you must have as well.

The different answers are...

1)... mouth

2)... nose

3)... both

... the 3rd answer... then... blew me away... then... for I thought, this was a clever answer... then.

This video is more about the advantages for breathing through the nose.

Before this video... I prefer breathing through the mouth... reason... it's a quicker... so quick that I've decided to use it most of the time... then.

Now... after this video... I've decided that my first choice will be to breath through the nose most of the time and only to breath through the mouth when it's really necessary.

Breathing through the nose is the most natural way to breath. It has natural built-in mechanisms to filter and process the air we need to live and yes, sing.

Finding The Right Person And Being The Right Partner

I will have to be very careful with people who are

solely interested in finding the right person in life,

instead of... working on being the right partner.

Here're some things to think about when looking for... or getting into a relationship. I found this quote by and unknown person... "It's not about finding the right person, but being the right partner". I'm all for this statement.

Marilyn Monroe was reported to have said... "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best". How true... BUT... I'd advice on being very careful with people who are solely interested in finding the right person in life, instead of... working on being the right partner.

The proceeding statement (by an unknown person) I found on the internet says it best..."Most marriages break up because people think their partner is the problem. There is an adage that says "two wrongs cannot make a right". Relationships do not start at perfection, but they are purposed to make us work towards it. A man and woman in any relationship are supposed to learn from one another, complement each other and thereby improving the lives of one another and becoming better individuals for their families and the society as a whole. No man, however intelligent and well situated in life, can know his areas of weaknesses until it's pointed out to him by the woman, and the same thing applies to the woman. If the man or the woman both make good efforts to become better, for example... by openly accepting loving, fair, and well-thought out criticisms from one another, instead of wasting time looking for "Mr or Miss Right", our relationships will be a whole lot more rewarding and happy than what it is today".

Here... these are mostly not my words... but I approve the message it conveys.

I needed to convert a Midi File to an MP3 File so I googled and found this Website that did a good job. No need to download any software. Very Easy.

But what I found interesting was the logo. Firstly, I like logos... but secondly... what was more interesting was that the Midi File I was trying to convert had something to do with Solfege (Solfa or Do-Re-Mi) and the Logo had something to do with Solfege.

My sister sent me a quote and I'm reminded of what Dad had to say about flying kites. He loved flying kites... or more like... fighting kites. He'd buy the strings, line it with glue mixed with broken glass (from florescent tubes), dry it in the sun... and then when it's ready... to test fighting it with other kite-fighters. The kites are fought so high in the air that the adversaries or opponents never actually see each other because they're very far away from one another.

I remember him saying...

"Bringing up children is like flying a kite... you've got to know when to pull and when to let go."

Sometimes he'll say it in Singlish...

"Bringing up children... like flying kite... you've must know when to (h)ulur and when to tarik."

(note... '(h)ulur' and 'tarik' are Malay words for 'release' and 'pull')

I've learnt that... life and relationships are very much like flying a a kite;

you've got to know... when to hold... when to pull... and when to let go.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

So he came back and told his master, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again the Religious Teacher asked the same disciple to go back to the lake.

The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed the Religious Teacher the same thing.

After sometime, again the Religious Teacher asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to his master.

The Religious Teacher looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own... and now we have clear water.

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. It will happen.

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process!

SEOUL: Unflattering paparazzi photos of the popular Korean girl group SNSD in a plane cabin have caused a stir amongst their fans, reported Korean media.

The photos, which were recently published in a Hong Kong tabloid, showed SNSD's Jessica stretched out in her seat, with one foot on the back of the seat in front of her.

They also showed Sooyoung asleep with her mouth open while Yoona wolfed down some food.

Many SNSD fans have expressed outrage online that the paparazzi had invaded the group's privacy and had taken unflattering photos of them, but some said it was refreshing to see their idols at their most natural.

SNSD is one of the most successful K-pop girl groups in Korea and routinely plays to sell out crowds in concerts across the region.

"It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" is a 1936 popular song by Billy Mayhew. Originally introduced by Fats Waller on the 78 rpm record Victor 20-1595,^[1] it was revived in 1955 by Somethin' Smith and the Redheads, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts in that year. John Denver tells a story about the song and does a cover in his 1978 album, Live at the Sydney Opera House (RCA Victor VPL1-7167).^[2] Other artists who have recorded versions include Billie Holiday, The Ink Spots, Tony Bennett, Bobbi Martin, Gerry Monroe, Brent Spiner, Lenny Breau, Buddy Greco, Steve Goodman, Ann Breen, Slim Whitman, Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats, Bobby Vinton, Patti Page, and Vera Lynn.

Originally a waltz, during the British Dixieland Revival in the 50's and 60's this melody was often played in fast four/four tempo,notably recorded by the Kenny Ball Band.

Somethin' Smith and the Redheads were an American vocal group doing mostly pop standards in the 1950s. Their biggest hit single was "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" in 1955, which reached #7 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The following year they reached #27 with their cover version of "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town". Both releases were issued on the Epic Records label. The group consisted of Smith (vocals, banjo), Saul Striks (piano) and Major Short (Double Bass).

Minor chart records included "Heartaches", "Ace In The Hole", and "You Always Hurt The One You Love". In 1961, they recorded for the MGM label.
