The ocean is made up of tiny drops of water.

The Starfish Story

Just came across this lovely story. Here below are 2 versions of it.
.
It reminds me of this quote by Mother Teresa.
.
“We ourselves feel that
what we are doing is
just a drop in the ocean.
But the ocean would be less
because of that missing drop.”
~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta
(Albanian born Indian Missionary and
Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity.
Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979. 1910-1997)
.
===.
Version 1:
.
The Starfish Story
~ an adaptation from an original story by Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"

The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean.

The surf is up and the tide is going out.  If I don't throw them back, they'll die."

"Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!"

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the sea.

Then, smiling at the man, he said "I made a difference for that one."

Version 2:
.
The Starfish Story
Guest Author - Deanna Joseph
adapted from The Star Thrower
by Loren Eiseley
1907 - 1977

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one!"

Muddy Water

===.
I've learnt that...
it is as difficult to drink water that is muddy,
as it is to think with mind that is cluttered.
~ age 49... inspired by article below.

===.
Here's How To Drink From Water That Is Muddy
~ Author Unknown

A Religious Teacher was travelling with a few of his followers.

While they were passing a lake, the Religious Teacher told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake."

The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to my master to drink?"

So he came back and told his master, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again the Religious Teacher asked the same disciple to go back to the lake.

The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed the Religious Teacher the same thing.

After sometime, again the Religious Teacher asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to his master.

The Religious Teacher looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own... and now we have clear water.

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. It will happen.

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process!

Song Quote ~ Pick Yourself Up...

.
"...pick yourself up,
dust yourself off and
start all over again."
~ Lyrics by Dorothy Fields
.
We all make mistakes in life. The trick is to learn from them, not to beat yourself up every time it happens. There's an old song with a nice beat & pleasant melody. Lyrics by Dorothy Fields and music by Jerome Kern. Some of the other lyrics are...
.
"don't lose your confidence if you
slip, be grateful for a pleasant trip"
.
"Will you remember the famous
men who had to fall to rise again?"
.
These words are from a song made famous by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and later by the legendary Nat "King" Cole and jazz pianist George Shearing. It has also been sung by several of the greats like Diana Krall and Frank Sinatra.

Walk Kansas Encouragement - Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, Start All Over Again
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers remind you that if you fail to do something or don't live up to your own expectations, you just have to "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again." If you fail to do your 30-minutes of walking a day or if you don't eat as many fruits and vegetables as you should, don't give up or get down on yourself. Just "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again."

===.
Lyrics:

Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, Start All Over Again
Lyrics by Dorothy Fields music by Jerome Kern
This version by Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers

FRED:
Please teacher, teach me something.
Nice teacher, teach me something.
I'm as awkward as a camel.
That's not the worst.
My two feet haven't met yet.
But I'll be teacher's pet yet,
'Cause I'm going to learn to dance or burst.

GINGER:
Nothing's impossible, I have found.
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up, dust myself off,
Start all over again.

Don't lose your confidence if you slip.
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up; dust yourself off;
Start all over again.

Work like a soul inspired
'Til the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired,
But you'll be a man, my son.

Will you remember the famous men
Who had to fall to rise again.
So take a deep breath;
Pick yourself up;
Dust yourself off;
Start all over again.

FRED:
I'll get some self assurance
If your endurance is great.
I'll learn by easy stages
If you're courageous and wait.

To feel the strength I want to,
I must hang onto your hand.
Maybe by the time I'm fifty,
I'll get up and do a nifty.

(dialogue)

FRED:
Pick yourself up; dust yourself off;
Start all over again.

Treat everyone with politeness…
even those who are rude to you…
not because they are not nice…
but because you are nice & that…
makes a difference of who you are.

Teach Less, Learn More

I remember listening to this. I liked the idea of "Teach Less, Learn More".

===.
===.

===.
Teach Less, Learn More ~ by PM Lee Hsien Loong
An excerpt from his National Day Rally 2004 Speech

112 ~ I think that there are a lot we can do, and which we will do. But
there is one thing which we shouldn't do and that is when we add more
teachers, we better don't add more homework or increase the syllabus
because that just defeats the whole purpose. Then we are back to square
one. In fact, I think we should cut down on some of this syllabus. It would
mean less pressure on the kids, a bit less rote learning, more space for them
to explore and discover their talents and also more space for the teachers to
think, to reflect, to find ways to bring out the best in their students and to
deliver quality results. We've got to teach less to our students so that they
will learn more. Grades are important – don't forget to pass your exams –
but grades are not the only thing in life and there are other things in life
which we want to learn in school.

===.
Excerpt of...
SPEECH BY PRIME MINISTER LEE HSIEN LOONG
AT THE TEACHERS’ DAY RALLY 2006
ON 31 AUG 2006, 8 PM,
THE MAX PAVILION, SINGAPORE EXPO

51. And if you are teaching the majority of kids, ‘Teach Less, Learn More’ means prescribe less, work harder. Because it is much harder than teaching the textbook, or teaching the examinations. You have to understand the subject and you have to get them to understand the subject. Focus on what is meaningful, what is important, getting the kids to be self-motivated to want to learn and to absorb what is inside.

52. We have talked about ‘Teach Less, Learn More’ for quite some time. I think it is happening in many schools. I just give you one example of what it means. This is a school from Bedok – it is Bedok South Secondary School. The things which they are doing, learning through projects – designing and making movies and posters for the Singapore Heart Foundation, designing gadgets, handphone charger and pencil holder using IT, Computer Aided Design.  Having prototype machines and making the things which they are designing. What subject is it? It is not one subject. It is a combined learning - Art, Music, Design and Technology, Food and Nutrition, all put together applied and through applying, you learn. I think it is very good, and it takes a lot from the teachers and we should recognise the efforts of the teachers who are able to make this happen.

Here's a sample of something that I like... just simple with with the voice of a singer and her guitar.

KT Tunstall - The Scarlet Tulip
http://www.directcurrentmusic.com/music-news-new-music/2011/5/12/kt-tunstall-the-scarlet-tulip.html
~ KT Tunstall - Scottish singer/songwriter does a sharp (and we think welcome) 180 from the brash, danceable techno-pop of her last album Tiger Suit with this new seven-track acoustic EP available only from her website...released in support of her upcoming solo tour, the songs were recorded, says KT, "by my husband and drummer, Luke Bullen, in our solar-powered studio in the woods in the English countryside." // Release: The Scarlet Tulip (Out now) // Sounds like: even the one-woman-band rhythmic loop overlays are gone on this soft-textured collection of introspective songs, nearly all written during the Tiger Suit period...finger-picked acoustic guitar and Tunstall's marvelously airy, tender rasp of a voice are the only sounds you'll hear (or need to hear) // Quote: I felt a creative need to do something impulsive and autonomous, so this EP is partly...to get the songs out there into the ether as I've always felt there is something special about sending new songs off into the world as soon as they are done. There's something magical about it." // What we like: this is the KT that we've found missing lately: the emphasis on organic, uncluttered songwriting while putting the gimmicky, trendy/indie "edge" on hold...the title track is subtle stunner of lovely guitar lines and a memorable melody...

Perspective ~ A Point Of View

I find the news below interesting... that their fans have 2 different and opposing views about the unflattering paparazzi photos.

View 2
"... but some said it was refreshing to

SEOUL: Unflattering paparazzi photos of the popular Korean girl group SNSD in a plane cabin have caused a stir amongst their fans, reported Korean media.

The photos, which were recently published in a Hong Kong tabloid, showed SNSD's Jessica stretched out in her seat, with one foot on the back of the seat in front of her.

They also showed Sooyoung asleep with her mouth open while Yoona wolfed down some food.

Many SNSD fans have expressed outrage online that the paparazzi had invaded the group's privacy and had taken unflattering photos of them, but some said it was refreshing to see their idols at their most natural.

SNSD is one of the most successful K-pop girl groups in Korea and routinely plays to sell out crowds in concerts across the region.

Who's sorry now? Who's sorry now?
Whose heart is aching for breaking each vow?
Who's sad and blue? Who's crying too?
Just like I cried over you?

Right to the end / Just like a friend
I tried to warn you somehow
You had your way, / Now you must pay
I'm glad that you're sorry now.

Right to the end / Just like a friend
I tried to warn you somehow
You had your way, / Now you must pay
I'm glad that you're sorry now

Love Letters In The Sand~ Pat Boone (Lyrics)

===.
Pat Boone - Love Letters In The Sand (Original)
"Love Letters In The Sand" was written with music by J. Fred Coots and lyrics by Nick and Charles Kenny. The song was originally published in 1931 and Ted Black & His Orchestra had the first hit with it. The summer of 1957 was dominated by Pat Boone's cover, and the recording sat at the #1 position for five weeks during June and July. By the way, that is Pat Boone whistling.

Love Letters In The Sand~ Pat Boone (Lyrics)
Words by Nick and Charles Kenny
Music by J. Fred Coots

On a day like today
We passed the time away
Writing love letters in the sand

How you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand

CHORUS
You made a vow that you would ever be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you

Now my broken heart aches
With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Now my broken heart aches
With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

Singapore Cowboy

Lyrics:
Singapore Cowboy
~ by Matthew Tan
~ Matthew & The Mandarins

I was born half a world from Nashville Tennessee
Where all year long the summer breezes blow
And while my friends are flying kites and planting Bonsai Trees
I got high on Country Radio

It wasn’t long before a song was born inside my heart
And soon I started singing right along
And understanding uncle smiled and gave my first start
By listening to my Shanghaied Country songs

[Chorus]
Singapore Cowboy, so far from my home
Bright stars and guitars but none of my own
Singapore Cowboy, where do I belong?
Won't you sing a poor cowboy, another lonely song

I sang my songs in Singapore and crazy as it seems
A distant shore kept calling after me
And ten years from my first guitar I gathered all my dreams
And here I am in Nashville Tennessee

It's a Sin to Tell a Lie
~ Somethin' Smith and the Redheads (Lyrics)

Be sure it's true... when you say... I love you
It's a sin... to tell... a lie...
Millions of hearts... have been broken
Just because these words... were spoken
I love you... yes I do... I love... you
If you break... my heart... I'll die
So be sure... it's true... when you say... I love you
It's a sin... to tell... a lie...

Cross my heart and I hope to die
I'll never, never, never tell another white lie
I took a little doll out on a date last night
You put a frog next to her and she looks alright
Now I'm between the devil and the deep blue sea
Coz I said girl, you look good to me
I told her I loved her, but oh how I lied
Now she's getting stuck to be my blushing bride
And as she walks to the altar... I'm sorry
Coz I can't tell the preacher I was drunk
So Lord have mercy on an old common sinner
Give me one more chance to let another guy win her
Cross my heart and I hope to die
I'll never, never, never tell another white lie

Joke ~ More or Less!

Nice comic timing. A joke always helps in long speeches. Note that the joke is only in the last 2 sentences while she was serious about everything else.

"Everyone agrees that we should have a clean wage system. However I find that whenever there is a discussion on a clean wage, there are always distorted comparisons with other countries. The Workers' Party mentioned that their proposals were derived after reviewing the remuneration systems in 12 developed economies, including the UK and the US. As these are the two most often cited as examples of where the PM, Ministers and President have lower salaries than the Singapore ministers, I thought it worthwhile to examine the politicians' remuneration packages in these 2 countries in a bit more detail. You will see that in these countries, political office is not only a privilege, but also about privileges. In fact, our more is less, and their less is more, more or less!"

~ an excerpt of MP Indranee Rajah's speech on ministers' pay, AsiaOne, Thursday, Jan 18, 2012

===.

Quote ~ Good Pay

She writes and speaks well.

I like this statement she made which is in the last sentence of the 3rd last paragraph of her speech on the ministerial pay review delivered at the Parliamentary debate on political salaries on January 18, 2012.

===.
"People do not object to good pay when they feel it is well-earned,
and if they feel that a minister is really working hard for the people.
Where they get upset is if they feel someone gets a good pay
just because he or she happened to land the job of a minister, and
they do not see a real and visible effort on the part of that person."

Quote ~ If they've done it once before...

This is a warning for all wives-to-be.

This could also be a warning for all girlfriends as well.

Be careful and watch out for early warning signs.

Anyway... this American Presidential Hopeful... is still hopeful...
poor fella... he doesn't stand a chance... mark my words.

Lyrics:

Firework ~ Katy Perry (Lyrics)

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting throught the wind
Wanting to start again

Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that tehre's still a chance for you
Cause there's a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gunna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed
So you can open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it's time, you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you're a firework
Come on slet your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gunna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you're a firework
Come on slet your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gunna leave 'em goin "Oh, oh, oh!"

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
